Intent on deepening his service to the community, our Chief Investment Officer, James M. Walden, CFA, has joined the Jayhawk Breakfast Rotary Club of Lawrence.
Rotary Club is an international organization whose mission is to bring together business and professional persons to provide “humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.”
Chapters at all levels of the service organization host and support projects to help build better lives locally and globally. Some of those causes have included growing local economies, supporting education, and fighting disease.
“Rotary is a service organization with a local and global impact,” said James. “I feel that I’m in a position in life where I can give back, and by joining with other members of Rotary, that impact can be even deeper than if I did it alone.”
“Plus,” he added, “they’re such a great group of people. They’re a pleasure to be around.”
The Jayhawk Breakfast Rotary Club is 25 years old, with its first meeting held October 11, 1994. The group meets Thursday mornings in Lawrence. Its yearlong roster of community service projects is impressively lengthy and includes:
- Habitat for Humanity Workday
- Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army
- Early Childhood Development at Kennedy Elementary School
- Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast
- Scholarships for Graduating High School Seniors
- Teacher of the Year Recognition
The local club also supports international service projects, including efforts to eradicate polio and hosting exchange students to the United States.
“Improving communities requires diverse outreach, and I’m proud to be a part of an organization that provides that kind of outreach every day,” James said.
